Reading the way to better wellbeing!
Over the past few years, there has been an alarming rise in the number of young people seeking some sort of support with their mental health, and as a result, wellbeing has become an increasing priority within education!
Although schools and teachers are continually developing new initiatives to help boost and support pupil wellbeing, it is important to recognise that we actually have a powerful wellbeing tool readily available within our classrooms and homes in the form of books!
Being able to read not only enables children to access the curriculum, engage with their learning and achieve in an academic sense but also unlocks many hidden benefits, especially when it comes to wellbeing in the classroom.
Books provide a world of opportunity for children to escape from their worries and learn to deal with complicated situations and emotions they may otherwise not encounter. Engaging with many different characters also helps children develop important empathy skills, as well as learn about other cultures and relationships; it can at times also help children feel less alone.
However, although undeniably important reading is not actually a skill which comes naturally for the human brain, and some children do struggle when it comes to the process of learning the many different components involved. For these children, who may find it more difficult to communicate and engage with their surroundings, the classroom and wider world can become a daunting place.
According to research from The National Literacy Trust, children who engage with reading are actually three times more likely to have high levels of mental wellbeing than those who do not. But how do we fully harness the power of reading to help children both within the classroom and at home feel encouraged to pick up a book?
We have created a Reading Support Guide to help teachers when it comes to supporting all students on their reading journey to improved wellbeing and performance in the classroom.
